Western Market now carries an Italian delicacy beyond compare. From Giovanni’s Appetizing Food Products in Richmond, Michigan we have Eggplant Caponata. This provincial Italian appetizer can be served surrounded by crisp vegetables. It is an excellent side dish to fish, tastes great in scrambled eggs with mozzarella, and is also a great spread for garlic toast.
Giovanni’s has been providing fine Italian foods since 1929 when immigrant Giovanni Ricossa was working as an assistant to the Frenchchefs at Detroit’s famous Cadillac Hotel. There he learned the art of making the perfect pâté. He also became known for his antipasto recipe, which he remembered from his youth in northwestern Italy. In 1935 he decided to open his own line of antipasto and Giovanni’s Appetizing Food Products was born.
The company is now run by Giovanni’s son Philip Ricossa and grandsons Giovanni and Philip Jr. They now ship products throughout the United States, Canada, Asia, Europe, Central America, South America, Puerto Rico, and Australia.
The Eggplant Caponata is made with eggplant grown here in Capac, Michigan. The traditional Italian product is popular at specialty stores throughout Detroit, and we hope that customers here at Western Market will embrace it as fondly as well.
Philip Jr. came out on April 30, 2011 to give out samples, and quickly sold through cases of the tangy delight. Thanks Philip Jr. for visiting!
